Welcome!

My name is Gloria (Merle) Huffman.

You've come to the right place to get great training in piano, voice, music theory, sight-reading, and composition!

I'm a longtime musical performer and teacher in the Fairfield County area of Connecticut, principally in Greenwich and Stamford, and I can't wait to help you reach your musical goals. I have taught people of all ages, from the very young to the rather old. I have also taught class piano and music appreciation for college students.

Experienced in a wide range of musical styles, I have played piano, organ and electronic keyboard, and I have sung classical, sacred, and popular music for many different types of musical occasions.

Here are a few of my credentials, which I draw upon to guide my music students:

I earned a double major in music and French as an undergraduate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (piano student of Barbara Rowan), and I have two Master's degrees (also from UNC-CH): one in French and Education, and the other in Piano Performance (piano student of Michael Zenge and Francis Whang, a student of Juilliard's Rosina Lhevinne). While in France during my senior year of college, I had the privilege of studying with a renowned master of the French piano tradition, Mlle. Marcelle Herrenschmidt, who studied with and later became assistant to Isidor Phillip (student of Camille Saint-Saëns and of Frédéric Chopin's protégé George Mathias).

I'm a 5th generation student of Ludwig van Beethoven and 3rd generation student of Josef Lhevinne and Artur Schnabel (via my private study with Adele Marcus of The Juilliard School in New York), 3rd generation student of composer Nadia Boulanger and 2nd generation student of composers Lukas Foss and Aaron Copland (via Dr. Roger Durham Hannay at UNC-CH), 2nd generation student of composer Darius Milhaud (via Barbara Rowan at UNC-CH), and student of avant garde American composer Dr. Roger Hannay. At UNC-CH, I was the piano accompanist for the famed Carolina Choir under Dr. Lara Hoggard, and I was an alto with the group as well.

In New York City I studied hit song composition with Grammy nominee American pop composer Lou Stallman ("It's Gonna Take A Miracle"), music copying (the old style fountain pen calligraphy) with Broadway music copyist Bert Kosow, and orchestration/arranging with commercial music composer Don Sebesky.

I was also an operatic vocal student of American tenor Thomas Booth and American soprano Pamela Kucenic, founder of Espresso Opera Company in New York. While studying with Ms. Kucenic, I was a soprano with The Riverside Church Choir.

Besides my musical work, I have taught French, Spanish and Latin, and I have worked as a Spanish translator for a New York City neighborhood newspaper. I have had a lot of fun translating French and Spanish songs into high-quality English singing translations. Two examples are Gabriel Fauré's Après un Rêve (After A Dream) and Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle's La Marseillaise (The Spirit of Marseille), which is the national anthem of France. Sheet music for both of these is on sale at the store for Gloria Sun Productions
